On the morning of July 24, 1915, the S.S. Eastland, capacity 2752, was one of several ships employed to bring Western Electric employees to a day-long picnic in Michigan City, Indiana. The passenger ship overturned only 19 feet from the wharf, in water just 20 feet deep, on the Chicago River at Clark and LaSalle. Many deaths were caused by an excess of passengers, and because passengers on the lower level were crushed by falling furniture or knocked unconscious by boat parts, and by the sudden rollover, preventing people from responding in any manner. The total death loss was 844 passengers and 4 crew members; 286 were minors, and the average of those who died was just 23 years old. Twenty-two entire families perished. It is the largest loss of life from a single shipwreck on the Great Lakes.
