Hypoglycemia is a condition where blood sugar levels drop too low. It can be a complication of diabetes, a problem by itself, or associated with other disorders. Low blood sugar can be caused by not eating for a long time, too much insulin from the pancreas, not enough glycogen from the liver, or long periods of strenuous exercise. Symptoms can include dizziness, headaches, confusion, blurry vision, night sweats, nightmares, shaking, mood swings, and hot flashes. Some people have a lot of these symptoms; others have only a few. While this condition is believed to be rare, many people report symptoms. Doctors ask about diet, when the symptoms happen, and test blood sugar to be sure. Usually, eating a diet lower in sugars, starches, and caffeine will correct the problem.
